IS THIS BASED ON THE TV SHOW "ONCE UPON A TIME"? Yes and no, but mostly no. Lost Fables is loosely (and we use that term ... well, loosely) based off of "Once Upon a Time" (as in the characters are the fables of old, but don't know it), but it also has elements of the comic book Fables thrown in, as well. Canon characters from the TV show and the comic book are not allowed in this game, however. We only borrowed tiny bits of their individual premises to make this game our own.
DO THE CHARACTERS KNOW OF THEIR PAST LIFE IN FABLETON? No. The only people who has retained their memories throughout the years and many reincarnations are the wise old Mother Goose and the brave King Cole. There are some permissible cases where people could have memory flashbacks, but not understand what they are seeing.
HOW DOES THE REINCARNATION CYCLE WORK? When the Fables were killed by The Darkness in Fableton, they were brought back as newborn babies in the town of Luna Bay, California. They were destined to live their story all over again in varying fashions-it will not all be exactly how the storybooks read. As long as the tales were still popular among the mortals, when the died, they would begin their cycle again; born anew to live their life as they first lived it in Fableton, with no memory. That being said, as certain stories lost their popularity, the fables lost their ability to be reborn, which is why certain fables are no longer around.
WHAT IS THE CHARACTER LIMIT? The character limit is 6 [six] characters per player maximum at this moment. You can start with up to four characters. The fifth and sixth must be earned through the point-system based on activity.
CAN I APP A CHARACTER FROM A FAIRYTALE/FABLE THAT ISN'T LISTED ON THE AVAILABLE CHARACTERS PAGE? This is where it gets a bit tricky. Since a character's reincarnation cycle is based off of the popularity of a certain fairytale or fable, it depends. If the character you have in mind is from a fairytale that has a fairly high popularity that, for some reason, we don't have listed, it would be allowed. If you aren't sure, feel free to ask us via our convenient Drop Box and we'd be happy to let you know if the character you have in mind is acceptable. The mods reserve the right, however, to reject the characters in question. If this happens, you are more than welcome to choose another character from a more popular tale to apply for, and the mods would be happy to give you suggestions.
CAN MY CHARACTER HAVE SURVIVED THE DARKNESS? No, they cannot. Think of it a bit like Shakespeare's Hamlet, everyone dies except for Horatio. In our little world here, Mother Goose and King Cole are our Horatio. This does not matter, as the playable characters do not remember.
Godmods and Metagaming.
Godmoding is the act of controlling another writer's character's through their words, actions, or beliefs without prior and explicit permission. This includes full movement of characters, assumption of standings or conversations, or claiming events happened that never did.
Metagaming is the a writer claiming their character has knowledge of the event, or acts accordingly due to OOC-obtained information without the character having been told or informed of these events. If the character has not heard it or the other writer has not said so, assume all information is unknown.
In both cases, when in doubt ask.
Keep in character.
Characters do change and shift through interactions. That is the beauty of writing, but arcs should be expressed and shown throughout the character's timeline. A sudden shift in character personality, interaction, or presentation without cause could not only affect other writers, but your own. Do not force a character to do something they would not, and do not change for a specific situation.
As we are adults, the moderation and administration team requests that we all handle issues as such. Please attempt to talk things out civilly between the two parties. If that is not successful, take it to the acting or available (depending on the time of day) mods or admins. If you feel as though you have been treated unfairly, please have documentation. And if you are uncomfortable speaking with one of the mods, there are two others who are available.
Sexual situations are allowed, but if it's posted in-game, please make sure it is placed behind a cut, and has the proper warnings listed so no one accidentally tries to read it at work, or somewhere public where they might get overly embarrassed over it. This goes for all kinds of trigger warnings and tagging, as well. If it is not a thread that stays below PG-13 or could hold a topic of theme others may find uncomfortable or disconcerting (apps included), please give the warning.
That being said, there is no forceful advances allowed on characters. Keep in mind that just because you may have a preference for a face being used, that does not give you the permission to dog the others for an interaction they may not be interested in. Content should always be spoken about and agreed on.
Life gets in the way. If you must take a hiatus, we ask you drop a line through the Dropbox as well as an email to at least one of the mods with an explanation of how long this break may last, any requests for your characters, and possibility of a partial or full return. Also, let the writers you have main lines with know as well.
It's not that hard to stay active. Our activity requirements are as follows; One completed thread or Two journal/media posts per month with interaction on others’ pages. This, with the point system, will add up to 30 points a month per character (see below). The "journal" posts can be used as a personal journal (that is unreadable by characters in game), as well as emails, PM's and text messages (just make sure that you properly label your posts). Or if you're tech savvy, for messages left on your computer desktop by bored hackers. We also have a Media community for things like blog posts (if your character has one), facebook posts, instagram posts, tweets, etc.
If you fail to meet activity requirements two months in a row, without notice of a hiatus, you will be removed from game.
The Point System: The point system is the way for Moderators to count activity. Players can earn their third character after 120 points and their fourth after 240 points. 30 Points for a completed thread. 20 Points for a place holder or an incomplete thread with 5 posts per writer. 10 Points for every media post. And 5 Points for every media interaction on another’s page with at last four posts from each.
Be courteous to the other players in game. Writing and RP is made up of a variety of people from now all over the world. Not everyone will act or think as you do, and we ask you respect each other. Keep others' sensitivities or issues in mind, and do your best to be the person with whom you'd wish to interact.
Any and all major plots need to be approved by the moderators.
This one is pretty self explanatory. Major plots (character death, pregnancies, anything that drastically alters a character's fate) need to be run by the mod for official approval. If you have any doubt about any plot you may have made, ask first..
Also, if you have any ideas for game-wide plots, please feel free to drop the mods a line at either of their emails, or the game's dropbox. We are more than happy to include other ideas we may not have thought about.
Your played-by's must be age appropriate. A 40-something year old actress will not be passing as a 20-something. It's just not happening. Also, please note that your character most likely has more than like two expressions. Try and use a PB that has a wide range of expressions, and not just the "model face". The Moderators reserve the right to ask you to pick another PB if we feel that the one you have chosen is too old/too expressionless. If your character is an adult entertainer, please warn the community and the moderators when we look for images.
Communication is key to every relationship, even online and in game. Make sure you talk to each other, especially when plots are concerned. There is a Discord channel for those who use the platform, but reach out to each other and do not be afraid to interact with new writers.
The Mary-Sue Rule.
Not all characters are perfection, sculpted from the finest of marble by the most deft handed sculptors. They are not going to magically sweep in and save the day at the last minute, thus winning the love of all the fair princesses. Lets face it: they're not Prince Charming There's only one Prince Charming, and there can only be one Prince Charming. We will reject apps that seem too "sue-ish" and if your character starts to become a Sue/Stu, you will be removed from game.
Fables MUST be born in Luna Bay, California!
Because of the magic that allowed them to be reincarnated into their new lives, when a fable is born into their reincarnation cycle, they must be born in the area of Luna Bay, California. That doesn't mean they are confined to the area, though. They are more than welcome to leave for college, or take vacations, but ultimately, within the fables lives all roads lead to Luna Bay. This does mean the child could have been born there and left.
Respect the Mods.
The mods of Lost Fables reserve the right to change/add to/or otherwise alter these rules as they see fit. We created this game, and we want to see it live a long, full life. Rules will change and adapt as the community grows and other instances arise. At the end of the day, our goal is not just to make the game as base-line pleasing for writers, but one with a strong set of guidelines to keep fair play in check. All decisions are run by the three of us, and are not made lightly. That being said, we are not above asking others for opinions when we, ourselves, are flummoxed.
SUMMARY OF LUNA BAY
Luna Bay is a picturesque seaside town in California between Monterey and Santa Monica. It has a small permanent population and is host to tourists and students year-round. Much like most of the coast, the marine industry and surfing culture heavily dominates the lives of many citizens. It has multiple schooling options for children through adults and is split into different parts of town based on the residents and function.
Mother Goose and King Cole had the choice to have everyone remember and hold no protection or have only them remember and have the ability to protect their kind. Because of that, Fables have lost touch with their past lives in the Fableton Realm. With a few exceptions, they are the only ones with memories of before. Their magic has, thus far, been able to hold back the Darkness, but with the waning belief in stories and darker nature of humans has weakened their powers.
Based on the darker memories and desires of mankind, the magic formed into something cruel and vile. It had been held at bay beyond the barrier for generations until the influence crept through by Wonderland. The lords include the Horned Beast, The Witch in the Woods, and False Innocence.

Fables is a game unaffiliated with any pre-existing lore world such as Fables the graphic novel series or Once Upon a Time. Luna Bay is a fictitious city along the central coast of California vaguely based off of Monterrey, Salinas, Halfmoon Bay, and Santa Cruz.
